Join us to plant 50 Elm Trees as part of a scientific field study!
Third Sunday of the Month from 1 pm -3 pm Green Crew Chapter House 6601 Auto Club Drive, Bloomington MN
The Elm Tree Restoration team will meet during the monthly Project day from 1-3pm. This team is organizing our Earth Day 2023 Project.
American Elm Trees use to be an important native tree in our forests. They were also prized trees in our urban habitats. Then Dutch Elm Disease largely wiped them out.
Over the past two decades scientist have been trying to develop a disease resistant variety of the American Elm so that they could be replanted. The scientists at the University of Minnesota have identified Minnesota trees with a natural resistance. They then breed those trees to isolate and enhance that natural resistance. They now have four varieties that are ready to be tested in the real world. Will they survive?
The Green Crew is partnering with the University to do this field test. We are planting 50 American Elms. Ten each from each of the four varieties and ten from a control group. We will be planting and then monitoring the trees for the next ten years.
This is an important project — please join us.
