Learning Leadership Through Action

Leadership is not a title; it’s something we do and how we live our life every day.

Green Crew members learn servant leadership through mentoring, training, and action.

Leadership development starts by observing how more experienced Crew members lead, leading smaller adventures, and eventually serving the Crew in a specific leadership role.

Each Green Crew Leadership member is provided access to both required and optional training. This training is based on the principles and skills of servant leadership. It covers principles of ethical leadership and specific skills like running a meeting or project management.

But after the training is the doing. And the Green Crew is our living practice lab to develop our leadership skills. By being leaders, we can become leaders.

Leadership is not a title; it’s something we do and how we live our life every day. It is about serving others by showing through example the way forward and providing guidance when they need it most.

The Green Crew incorporates leadership development throughout our program. Our goal is to become better leaders in and for our communities by taking action, even if we don’t have an official title of “leader.”

Can a group of youth doing environmental projects really make a difference?

Yes. Come watch us.

What is the significant of the starfish picture?

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young girl, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young girl paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”

To this, the young girl replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young girl, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young girl listened politely. Then she bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

Who can be involved in the Green Crew?

You can. If you are a youth join us. If you are an adult, support us.
