Fungi are important to the forest ecosystem. They decompose dead matter for new life to take place. They’re also essential food sources for other animals in the forest. The Green Crew has a couple projects under this sphere that we keep active around the Bloomington Chapter House.
With the aim of introducing more fungi to the Bloomington Chapter House’s ecosystem, we created the Log Inoculation project. Dead logs are drilled into, creating pockets for mycelium. The holes are then filled with different varieties of fungi and sealed with wax, ensuring that the mycelium stays in place. We then carry the logs to marked spaces around the Green Crew’s Chapter House, watch them integrate to the ecosystem and, over the next few months, observe the fungi growth.
This project is a mix between a field study and fungi study, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to go into mycology!
The Green Crew’s FunGiS survey project is training youth to become experts in surveying the woods to find, document, and record the presence of fungus. With the Green Crew, we’d explore the grounds of the chapter house and partner properties, tracking the different species of fungi. Fungi are part of the forest’s ecosystem, and by assessing and recording the various species and their growth, we can help the forest at large.
